In Italian — «cornicello» (little horn), «cornuto» (horned), «cornetto»(croissant), or simply «corno» (horn) or «corna» (horns) — the horns ward off the evil eye of devilish envy. By invoking bull-like strength against such evils, the horns bring good luck and good fortune, similar to «touch wood» or «knock wood». Often worn on jewelry, it is also common to see the charm hanging inside a car for protection. Some historians believe it also derives from “cornucopia” — goat horns filled with gold, precious stones, and products of the earth as symbols of abundance and success, also called the Horn of Plenty. MALOCCHIO/MANO CORNUTO: Literally, «horned hand», is an Italian hand gesture of ancient origin, in which the index and pinkie fingers are extended while the middle and ring fingers are curled into the palm and sealed with the thumb.
