In Celtic society, many tribes claimed to be descended from wolves, and they generally believed wolves to positive symbols of transformation associated with the moon. This wolf and moon connection likely originates from the Celts, where the mythology claims the wolf would chase the sun down each day, catching and devouring it at dusk, thus allowing the moon to rise at night. Celtic mythology also considered the wolf to rule over winter, which was the time from Halloween to February. A wolf was also the companion animal to the Celtic goddess Cerridwen (goddess of the moon and fertility) and to the god Cernunnos (the horned forest god of life, animals, fertility, wealth, and the underworld).
